Talking to Someone at Risk

Do you suspect or know a friend or family member who is a victim of domestic violence? Give her the hotline number for Shelter Our Sisters (201) 944- 9600 201-836-3071 (TTY) or the National Domestic violence Hotline number 1.800.799.SAFE (7233) 1.800.787.3224 (TTY). Providing access to Information may be the most important way you can help.

What you can say:
“I’m worried about you and I want you to know that I’m always there for you, if you think you ever need anything.”

Resist the urge to give up on her even though it looks like she is making poor decisions by “putting up with the abuse.” Instead try statements like, “I see you are really struggling and surviving some difficult/tough things; I want you to know you can count on me if you ever need any help.”

“I'm afraid for you safety, there are places you can call for help like Shelter Our Sisters.”
