WELCOME TO SHELTER OUR SISTERS

Who We Are…
Shelter Our Sisters is founded on the belief that every human being has the right to live free from violence and fear of violence. Shelter Our Sisters works with individuals and families in need of services and education relating to family violence. Primarily assisting Bergen County women in crisis and their dependents, Shelter Our Sisters provides temporary housing for abused and battered women, along with a diversified continuum of services focused on the attainment of safety, empowerment, and self-sufficiency for each client. Included in that focus is the aim to reduce problems relating to domestic violence, such as child abuse, sexual assault, substance abuse, sexism, and racism.

Shelter Our Sisters (a.k.a. SOS) is a 24-hour, seven day a week, non-profit organization, geared specifically for providing emergency, safe, confidential housing to women and children who suffer the horror of domestic violence. By providing the practical, emotional and psychological support needed to break free from abuse, SOS has been instrumental in opening the door to a new way of life for thousands of Bergen County’s most vulnerable. SOS fosters healing and change, helping to stop the cycle of violence that affects us all. Much of the funding for SOS’s services is through the benevolence and charity of donors and volunteers. Shelter Our Sisters is the ONLY facility, which houses victims of domestic violence in Bergen County, New Jersey and provides its clients with four transitional houses.

Shelter Our Sisters provides safe housing to approximately 300 women and children annually, servicing approximately 500 women and children, including former clients and Hispanic families living in the community. The 24-hour hotline responds to approximately 5,000 callers annually.
